|Princess Shasta Talia Soltranis of Rane
Princess Shasta becomes heir to the Ithyrian throne when her twin brother, Daric, is murdered on their 16th birthdays.Shasta has a compassionate heart and an adventurous nature, but she is also spoiled, naive, and immature. She is not quite the consummate girly-girl… while she enjoys dressing up and attending court parties, she’s not much for embroidery or sewing and instead prefers riding horses and learning to fence. She eventually also discovers a love of learning and an aptitude for politics.Shasta’s mother, Talia, died shortly after Shasta and her brother were born, so Shasta was raised by her father, King Soltran. After her brother’s murder, she is the last remaining descendant of the royal house of Rane. As such, she possesses the legendary “amber eyes of Rane” and a natural charisma that, when properly channeled, may make her a great leader one day.
Talon and her two younger sisters were sold to a performing troupe as children, after their parents were killed in a massacre. Talon witnessed their mother’s murder, and has been dressing as a boy since their parents’ death to provide protection for her sisters. She considers herself the family guardian, and takes her responsibilities very seriously.Having spent most of her life living as a male, Talon developed interests in athletics and swordsmanship. She has little interest in traditionally feminine pasttimes, so her disguise does not feel like a prison. In fact, it allows her to explore interests that might have been denied to her if she were living as a woman.Talon is rigidly self-disciplined and impeccably honorable. She lives for the service and protection of those she loves, oftentimes to her own detriment. She is resourceful, determined, and courageous. Talon is an Outlander, part of a race of olive-skinned, dark-haired nomadic hunters who live in the eastern plains and forests of Ithyria. Outlanders are viewed by Ithyrians as less “civilized” than the rest of the kingdom, because of their unique belief systems and nomadic lifestyle.
Lyris is Talon’s younger sister. She is shy and reserved, the family peacemaker, who often gives Talon and their youngest sister Bria advice and support. In the performing troupe, Lyris is an accomplished harpist and dancer, and usually performs as part of a duo with Bria.Lyris is a gentle soul, wise beyond her years. She likes animals, reading, and cold tea, but more than anything else Lyris is a deeply spiritual person who feels a strong connection with the Goddess. It is this connection that inspires her to enter the priestesshood later in life, and her particularly powerful connection with the Goddess allows her to become quite the unexpected weapon when it really counts…
Bria is Talon’s youngest sister. She is a very gifted singer with a beautiful soprano voice, and often performs with her sister Lyris in the troupe. Impetuous and outgoing, Bria is the mischief maker, and her lack of self control and tendency to live only in the present gets her into a lot of trouble.Bria is cheerful, energetic and far more flirtatious than Talon would like. Still, for all her selfishness and silliness, Bria has a good heart and means well, and would do anything to protect her friends and family.
|Chancellor Kumire Fickettis of Rane
Chancellor Kumire is Princess Shasta’s first cousin. Pandering, conniving, and selfish, he is nonetheless a high-ranking member of the Monderan Senate, and for a time he serves as the Princess’s tutor.
Qiturah is the Honored Mother of Verdred, which means she is the highest ranking priestess in Verdred province. Qiturah is the narrarator of the Ithyria series of novels, as she is the kingdom’s scribe. She often puts her own spin on things or adds a little commentary of her own before certain chapters. Qiturah is a wise and well-educated woman with deep devotion to the Goddess and an appreciation for the needs of Her people.
